This is Avelo Airlines, a very low-cost carrier based out of Burbank (BUR), near Los Angeles. The carrier on Wednesday inaugurated a single-route service between BUR and Santa Rosa (STS) in California's famous wine country.

Avelo plans to rapidly ramp up its operations and grow to 11 routes on the West Coast, including several markets such as Arcata/Eureka, Calif. (ACV) and Pasco, Washington (PSC), which the carrier doesn't believe.
Avelo's fleet includes three Boeing 737-800s and three smaller 737-700s based in San Bernardino.

Most seats have just 29 inches of pitch, making any adult a tight squeeze. For context, the same aircraft flying Southwest is equipped with a 175-seat all-coach configuration.

The seats themselves are Akro Series 6, with a built-in curve around hip level for an extra two inches of knee room.
Despite these so-called improvements, I personally would avoid these seats entirely for flights longer than two hours. They are both stiff and poorly padded.
Fortunately, most of Avelo's routes are currently blocked for less than two hours. And since fares start at just $19, I'd even do it again - just for a short walk.
If you're looking for more space, there are 60 extra legroom seats in the forward section of the cabin, rows 1 to 8 and 22 to 24, as well as exit rows 20 and 21.

It can be purchased for $15 and up. The extra legroom seats have a pitch of 32 to 35 inches, providing a more comfortable ride.
Currently, all seats recline except those in the exit row and last row. But that won't be the case for long.
Avelo's founder and CEO Andrew Levy told TPG that the current plan is to lock the seats into the pre-child position to avoid creating an extra tight squeeze for those trying to stand up during the flight.
Levy noted that they are still considering keeping the recline option for extra legroom seats and no final decision has been made.

The aisle armrests can be raised or lowered, but the window ones are fixed in the upright position.
Since the Avelo doesn't offer in-flight entertainment or power outlets, there's nothing in the way of under-seat storage, giving you a (much-needed) chance to stretch your legs.
There is a very thin single mesh seat backpack, so don't expect to store more than a magazine or water bottle in it. Instead, you can put a laptop or iPad in the seat's built-in literature pocket.
The tray tables are 17 inches wide and 7.5 inches long, which is definitely too small for a 13-inch (or larger) laptop. After all, my 11-inch iPad Pro barely fits.

Avelo charges $35 for full-size carry bags, so finding overhead container space should be no problem if you decide to bring a rollboard.
If you want the best seat in the house, you should choose seat 1A, 1B or 1C. These bucket seats don't have a partition in front, which means you'll have tons of legroom.
The port bulkhead - seats 1D, 1E, 1F - has tons of legroom, but note that there's a galley wall forward.
Exit rows (20 and 21) are a good option for extra legroom. They offer a 38-inch pitch.

The remaining seats with extra legroom have different heights depending on the plane's side and row number.
What to omit, omit the last line (37). Proximity to toilets can be problematic and the kitchen wall can make you feel claustrophobic.
Row 12 is also missing windows, so if you're looking for the perfect "Wing View Wednesday" shot, you'll want to sit elsewhere.
Now, most of the carrier's routes are under two hours, meaning you won't be cramped for time.

Then, when you land, you'll be glad you saved money on your vacation. Right now, one of Avelo's biggest selling points is its prices, which start at just $19.

Avelo Isn't Your Average U.s. Low Cost Airline, And Flights Start At Only $29
It's been a tough few years for the airline industry, which continues to face a host of issues, including an ever-changing pandemic, an increase in disruptive passengers, a pilot shortage and high energy prices.
About a year ago, a new low-cost service, Avelo Airlines, took to the skies for the first time. Avelo is currently expanding its business despite the above challenges. But that doesn't mean carriers don't face obstacles similar to other industries.
"Morning Report" host David Brancaccio spoke with Andrew Levy, founder, chairman and CEO of Avelo Airlines, about navigating the region now. Below is an edited transcript of their conversation.
David Brancaccio: So timing isn't necessarily everything, but it's certainly critical, and there was a surge in travel after our lockdown period, which you'll remember. Should you see it expand further?

Andrew Levy: Well, yes, we are. It's certainly been an interesting year during the pandemic, and it's been full of all kinds of challenges. You know, there's some stuff going on right now. On the one hand, you have very high fuel prices - I mean, you know, they've been going up all year, but they've really gone up lately. But at the same time, as you mentioned... there's a huge demand in the market right now for travel, especially in the domestic US.
BRANCASIO: So here's this expansion going on. But it's a time of inflation and you'll have to buy a lot of jet fuel, which will be more expensive, I guess?
Levi: Well, that's the latest challenge we've thrown at ourselves. First it was Delta, then it was Omicron, and now it's high energy prices. Look, the end result of that, I think you're going to see rates go up, not just for us, but across the industry. I think people see that clearly, and I think people are a little shocked at where prices are these days. But fuel is big and it's a big input cost for us. It's our biggest single cost and it's gone up quite a bit. So we're going to do what we can to pass that on to the customer. And, you know, now the consumer is in a better place. You know, unemployment is very low, a lot of savings are being built up, and people are definitely spending on travel and travel-related experiences, which is great. But yes, look, us
